Late Sea Runner

Weather Stuff:

Well, it appears that it will be another Christmas day of pretty average weather, but that’s Tassie. The pattern at the moment includes weak high pressure ridges and vigorous cold fronts. This is producing wind and showers – nice in the sun out of the wind… in other words… stay inside. Enjoy!

Fishing Stuff:

I managed to get out for fish last night and due to time limits I decided to head for the Mersey at Latrobe. There were plenty of fish moving but I thought that the sea runners would have moved on by now. So I put on a Red Fin wobbler and flicked it around for a while. It wasn’t too long and I had a nice fish on but in the fight I got snagged and lost the fish and lure. I put on another Red Fin and fish another area before moving back to where I lost the fish and first cast, bang! I was on. I was fortunate enough to land a nice sea runner just under 2lb. This fish had the colourisation simular to a Salmon, slightly greenish-blue and the scales came off easily. I lost another fish before loosing another lure and deciding to head home.

Andrew K managed to land 2 nice trout from Arthurs last Friday. The biggest of the two was around 3.5lb. The big one was caught on a cocky and the smaller one on a lure.

The chance of a thunderstorm...

Weather Stuff:

Monday night seen some thunderstorm activity mostly around 12:30am. One lightning strike caused phone line damage in Ulverstone. Tuesday and Wednesday have been windy and mostly fine. Today a strong cold front has combined with a strong tropical inflow which seems to be further strengthening the front. There is some thunderstorm activity around South of Adelaide and the BOM have forecasted possible thunderstorms for tonight. If the current ‘mix’ continues then a storm is quite possible.

The progs for Christmas aren’t looking so crash hot, so prepare for a showery and windy day, anything better than that will be a bonus.

Fishing Stuff:

Andrew K is planning a day trip to Arthurs for tomorrow so I look forward to his report. Not much else to report.

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING for Damaging Winds

Weather Stuff:

Yesterday was one out of the bag and the opposite of today. A strong cold front is crossing producing strong winds, Smithton has had gusts up to 95km/h. There is a remote chance of some storm activity but that may depend on how well the tropical inflow mixes things up.

Fishing Stuff:

The conditions at Arthurs on Friday night were not great with strong north-westerly’s. JC and I managed to land 1 each on a cocky, both just under 2lb. The winds swung strong SW by morning and it cooled off dramatically. Didn’t see much moving where we were, but didn’t have time to go searching for the fish anywhere else. I landed 1 more just before finishing for the day.

"What is it with tackle shop people?"

Weather Stuff:

There is a weak ridge moving away from Tassie today as a cold front approaches. The BOM have floated the possibility of thunderstorms but I can’t see any triggers for this to occur at this early stage. At the moment, there are no feeds to the tropical airflows and the cloud band appears weak and disorganised.

Fishing Stuff:

What is it with tackle shop people? From my experience, they are always full of advice but never listen when you have something to say to them. So where does their knowledge come from? Most of them rarely get to fish because they are working in the shop. May be they listen just to a select group of regulars that frequent the store? Why is most of their advice crap? Perhaps it’s because these “sources” they use bend the truth? Perhaps it’s because they have a particular line of tackle they need to clear? My advice to anyone new to fishing would be, don’t talk to tackle shop people, talk to people who actually fish and who you can trust to tell the truth.

Oh yeah – “squidgies are the way to go!” ;-)

Nuisance...

Weather Stuff:

Well they’re back! Will the westerlies hang around for Christmas? Will it be another Christmas of wind and nuisance showers making being out doors unpleasant? I hope not. The high pressure ridge will be so weak that its influence may even go unnoticed. The rain for the weekend will move in Friday night and continue most of Saturday with perhaps a slight break Sunday.

Fishing Stuff:

I was informed that Simon braved the conditions last night to fish the Forth – no report as yet. It looks like my trip to Arthurs this weekend may be a wet one, but as long as the fish are there it should be a problem.

"a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb..."

Weather Stuff:

Last night seen a strong front move thru producing some decent rainfalls. This afternoon there is another vigorous front moving thru at pace. This front has produced some thunderstorm activity on the West Coast which is forecasted to move on to Hobart this evening. Yet another front is due to cross tomorrow being pushed by a strong westerly flow. This pattern should be broken by Friday with a ridge crossing the State, be it, briefly.

Strong westerlies are expected...

Weather Stuff:

No thunderstorms occurred along the NW Coast Friday night as the system weakened over us. Yesterday seen us move in to the pattern I was hoping to avoid – the mild westerly pattern. This produces days which are mild one minute cool the next with sunny breaks then cloudy periods even irritating rain showers. The last 3 summers or so have been like this, let’s hope this pattern is only short lived.

Looks like this week will see the westerlies continue until at least the weekend. Tomorrow may warm up a little preceding the passage of a cold front.

Fishing Stuff:

It appears that Dave may have had no real success on his trips as he has avoided the topic in his replies :-) I’m hoping to get up to Arthurs this weekend with JC – I hope the fishing is still excellent so JC can have a chance to get on to a decent trout. Max arrived for a surprise visit to the State – he was hoping to take the family to Arthurs for a day trip today, so may be I’ll get a report from him later.

Thunderstorms seem very unlikely

Weather Stuff:

After a period of warm and humid conditions, it appears that we will receive a little bit of rain and a return to mild dry conditions. Thunderstorms seem very unlikely at this stage and even the heavy rain that BOM are forecasting seems a remote chance to me. It will take quite an inflow of warm & humid air to beef up the trough to produce any heavy rain. But the weather is dynamic and can change quickly, so the next 4 to 6 hours should reveal the systems hand.

Fishing Stuff:

Still waiting on Dave’s report from his trips. Between the weather, family commitments and the time of year, getting out for a fish may be difficult over the next few weeks, but just gotta keep an eye out for the opportunities.
