8 pounder!

Weather Stuff:

A high pressure system is moving away to our east bringing more north-easterly winds. The MSL map shows a complex system at the moment, which can occur this time of year. The BOM expect the next cold front to produce a pre-frontal trough before crossing Tas – hopefully this may produce some interesting weather?

Fishing Stuff:

The big news from Simon’s Lake Echo trip was the 8lb brownie. To my relief it was caught by Simon’s father-in-law! When they went to clean the fish, 2 reasonable sized rainbows emerged from the trout’s gut! I think Simon caught 4 smallish rainbows.

Cool, with cloud increasing overnight.

Weather Stuff:

Cloud is increasing today as the next low moves in. This low should weaken as it crosses but may still produce reasonable falls for the NW. From Sunday onwards things should improve for a couple of days.

Fishing Stuff:

Apparently Simon is back out fishing. He may be in the Lake Echo region so it will be interesting to hear how he went. Spoke to Dave today and I think he said he’s up to 15 so far. He has caught quite few on a Lake Barrington trip and also 5 from Lake Rowallan, most caught on Rapala’s. I might catch a fish again, who knows?

Active thunderstorms

Weather Stuff:

Monday afternoon the low finally started to ramp up and some severe storms formed over southern Victoria and the started to extend south across the Strait around 4pm. There was a possible severe thunderstorm that moved thru Wynyard around 5pm and the BOM issued a warning. An extensive thunderstorm cell moved over Ulverstone around 10pm Monday night and lasted for around an hour.

Tuesday seen the storm activity move South. Hobart had high humidity and mild temps. Around lunchtime the sun made it’s presence felt for about a couple of hours then by 3pm the storms moved in. It went from bright sunshine to near darkness with-in a few minutes. The storms lasted around the Richmond area for many hours.

Today sees another fast moving front crossing the State. The BOM have forecasted thunderstorms this arvo, mainly for the West of the State. The front is developing, so I guess it could interesting?

Fishing Stuff:

Due to the strong NE winds and heavy rain causing the river to flood, I decided to not head out for a fish. Simon managed to land 3 trout at Arthurs during his trip, which is good going considering the conditions.

Possible thunderstorms and heavy falls about the north(?)

Weather Stuff:

The north easterlies have really kicked in today. The Bureau is having some trouble working out what is going to happen. Last night they forecasted thunderstorms for the NW Coast and again first thing this morning. Then they updated the forecast around 8:30am without thunderstorms and then again just after 9am including a severe weather warning for flooding down the East Coast. This warning was then cancelled by 11:30am. The latest forecast now has thunderstorms back on the cards. It would appear that the BOM are a little perplexed with this current situation. There is another deep low speeding in from the west which will have its westerly march halted by the current blocking pattern over Tassie. This will be an interesting situation; I wonder where the deep low will end up?

Fishing Stuff:

I’m thinking of challenging the north easterlies tomorrow and heading out for a fish. I’m still trying to catch a sea runner so hopefully tomorrow may produce some results? Simon is currently fishing Arthurs. I notice the strong north easterlies are hammering into the plateau, so I’ll be interested to hear what he has to report from this trip.

Blocking the eastward progression.

Weather Stuff:

The main cloud band associated with the low pressure area is crossing this morning. It isn’t producing much in the way of rainfall. This low is being cradled between 2 highs, one to the east of us and one to the south. It appears the low is weakening while being held up. The Bureau expect the low to move over the State by tomorrow but stall again. I’m not sure if there is enough oomph in this low to produce anything spectacular over the weekend?

Fishing Stuff:

I read an Internet report for Arthurs on the 7th and 8th of Oct. This was the period that I was at Arthurs last. The guy allegedly caught 7 over this time. The report seems odd though as he talks about using Ashley lures then blood worm soft plastics then further down in the report he’s talking about minnows? We saw nothing at all over this period. I still feel personally that some of these blokes are slightly bending the truth, to put it nicely.

Moist East to Northeast winds over the state

Weather Stuff:

The cloud band associated with the slow moving low is edging closer. Much of the thunderstorm activity has ceased, but you never know what may occur? The rain is forecast to reach us by morning. Temps preceding the rain will be rather mild.

Fishing Stuff:

JC and I had a crack at the sea runners last night. I had one on for a few seconds, but it took the lure so close to the bank that I didn’t have any slack to play with and hence it got off. Simon has had a couple of trips out searching for sea runners. He informed me he had a battle with a sea run trout about 3-4 pounds but it managed to win and not Simon.

Fishing Folk Law

Weather Stuff:

The low in the bight is receiving an injection of warm and humid tropical air which may make things interesting for later in the week and the weekend. The Bureau aren’t forecasting any thunderstorms at this stage, but I will make the bold prediction – I think there is a 47.6% chance that the Coast will get some thunder sometime between Thursday and Sunday.

Fishing Stuff:
According to fishing folk law, during periods of Easterly weather the fishing action is slow or non existent. I guess the next few days may test this theory. Simon has indicated that he will be fishing at Arthurs later in the week and I intend on getting out one night attempting to catch a sea runner. My confidence is a little down so far this season, especially after my last Arthurs trip, so I nice sea runner would be welcome.

Meridional Flow

Weather Stuff:

The weather pattern has now changed from the strong westerly zonal flow to a more meridional flow. This will bring extended periods of easterlies before the approach of areas of low pressure, as what will happen over the course of the week. These patterns tend to produce slower moving systems. These easterlies will most likely bring some drizzle to the coast and bring the humidity up a little.

Fishing Stuff:

Had a message from JC informing me he had caught a trout at the Riverbend camp site. There is a small creek at the rear of the property, so I assume this is where he caught it from?

I would like to try and get out one night this week to see if I can locate any sea runners, but not sure if I’ll get that chance?

That's Fishin'

Weather Stuff:

The Gold Coast had its first major severe storm yesterday with hail the size of golf balls: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200510/s1480718.htm

Closer to home, there is a front on its way that may produce some thunder and hail, mainly around the south.

I was asked what I thought this summer would be like, so here is my forecast: I think that this summer will be another fizzer with mainly lower max temps, wind and drizzle showers that have no real rain that makes a difference to anything. I forecast there will be a max of 4 days or less during summer that may reach high 20’s low 30’s. Hopefully I’m wrong!

Fishing Stuff:

Amid criticism that I have not blogged for over a week due to the dismal fishing at Arthurs Lake, I would like to take the chance to say that this is not the reason for non-blogging. I have had an extremely busy little period and haven’t had the opportunity to write.

It is true that the long awaited trip to Arthurs with the Q’land fellows turned out to be a complete dud, but still a good time was had by all, even if the fishing was crap. My theory is, (and those who know me, know I like theories), the very strong westerly weather leading up to the trip, the easterly weather during the trip and the possibility that the Almanac may have some credence in indicating that the fish had 3 days of strong feeding just prior to the trip, caused the fish to either go off the bite or feed exclusively on one type of feed and may be in one area. All the boats that took to the lake headed to the eastern side of the lake and there were no boats fishing in the western half of the lake.

Anyway, that’s fishing!

Queensland v Tasmania

Weather Stuff:

It has been interesting to see that a Severe Weather Warning was issued for the State due to extreme winds this morning and some areas had gusts exceeding 110km/h but the central NW was basically clam for most of the morning. It looks like the next few days will produce a complex situation of cold fronts, troughs, lows and highs – should be fun. I’d suggest, expect anything over the next few days!

Fish Stuff:

Well, there could be a big weekend of fishing as some of the big names in fishing head to the lake country to take on the wild Tassie trout. It’s Queensland v Tasmania. The weather conditions will play a big part in how the contenders will go. There will be a wide array of tackle, strategies and plans, but I think it will require shear determination to come out on top.

A Vigorous Westerly Airstream

Weather Stuff:

I had a report yesterday that some shops in East Devonport had lost their roofs in the early arvo due to the extreme wind gusts. The cold pool produce some good snow on the highlands overnight and the next one look’s set to repeat the dose tomorrow as well. The forecast is for snow down to the 700m level by late tomorrow.

Fishing Stuff:
It will be interesting to see if this cold bout will affect the fishing later this week, but I guess there is only one way to find out!

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

Weather Stuff:

The current cold out-break is bringing extreme winds, heavy rain and highland snow. There is a Severe Weather Warning in place regarding winds exceeding 100km/h. There has been some thunderstorm activity down South, mainly in the SW. Things look to ease tomorrow but another strong front is due for Wednesday, which will stir things back up again with wind, rain and snow.

The storms that moved thru last Wednesday night produced some damage to power and telephone systems.

Fishing Stuff:

I managed to land 3 nice trout during the Arthurs trip. With-in 15 minutes of arriving at our “spot” I had landed a 1.5 pounder on the Huey’s then another about the same size 10 minutes later on the ‘cocky’, (cockroach). I had another hit on the Huey’s later in the night but it managed to avoid a trip to the frying pan. The next morning’s efforts proved fruitless, but Andrew K and I managed to land a small trout each on the Black ‘n’ Gold spinner later that arvo. The conditions on the last night were too rough to have an enjoyable fish. The over all conditions were not flash with fresh winds and the odd rain shower. The next trip should be coming up very soon with Andrew W and Snapper but the conditions for these Q’land guys may not be kind either with snow and strong winds forecast, although Westerly winds may allow for some sheltered fishing in most of the good spots.
